Washington DC– Today the US House of Representatives passed the American Dream & Promise Act with bi-partisan support for a second time. This legislative proposal would provide a pathway to U.S. citizenship to an estimated 4.4 million undocumented immigrants living in the U.S., including Dreamers, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients, Temporary Protected (TPS) holders, and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) beneficiaries. This momentum is furthered by the launch of a national historic hunger strike in which TPS holders and their families demand permanent residency and justice restored to the wrongful terminations to TPS protections we saw in the last four years.

In response to this historic news today for the TPS community, members of the National TPS Alliance made the following statements:

“Inclusion of our families is the direct result of the struggle of TPS holders who for the past four years, placed constant pressure on those in power to demand justice. We now expect the Senate to take immediate action to turn this crucial piece of legislation into law. And in the meantime, we will continue to push any and all legislative mechanisms which would guarantee our long-awaited permanent residency.” Melissa, TPS Holder from Haiti

“As we demand that congress acts upon a national consensus by including a permanent residency for TPS holders in any and all legislative packages. We also continue to call on President Biden to fully restore the TPS program and make use of the TPS statute in order to benefit the largest number of immigrants living and working in the United States during this moment of urgency”Mardoel Hernandez, TPS Holder from Honduras

“We have moved just one step closer towards our goal for permanent residency. While today we take a moment to celebrate the passing of H.R. 6, our fight will continue until we achieve a path to citizenship. This is why as a child of a TPS holder, I will be in Washington DC to participate in the 43 -day hunger strike, to send a clear and strong message to the White House and Congress that Our Lives Are Not Temporary! We are demanding a Permanent Residency and Justice NOW.” Rebecca Vasquez, Daughter of TPS Holders from El Salvador
