Breaking: House Passes TPS Extension for Haiti, Sending Measure Forward in Legislative Process

Nationwide– Today, the U.S. House of Representatives took a historic step by voting to approve H.R. 1689, with 224 votes, to protect Haitian TPS holders through a discharge petition. This action removes control from the Speaker and forces a vote on legislation that has majority support. The bill would provide three years of protection and work authorization to approximately 350,000 Haitian nationals.

In response, Jose Palma of the National TPS Alliance issued the Following Statement:

“This extraordinary and rare procedural maneuver comes at a time when the stakes could not be higher; the administration has presided over the largest de-documentation in modern history. The future of 350,000 Haitians is at stake, along with another million TPS holders whose status this administration has terminated.

“At a time when so much of the news on immigration is negative, this is a welcome and meaningful step forward. Members of the National TPS Alliance will leave no stone unturned in the fight for the protections TPS holders urgently need. We still have a long way to go.

We will join our colleagues to make our case at the Supreme Court on April 29, and we will continue to demand that Congress enact permanent protections for TPS holders. Today’s bipartisan vote reflects the will of the American people, and we will not stop until those protections are secured.”
