TPS Holders Mobilize to Defend Their Lives and Futures Ahead of Supreme Court Arguments
Los Angeles, CA — The Trump Administration is trying to force more than a million immigrants to suddenly lose their lawful status – and the Supreme Court is considering whether to let that happen.
The Supreme Court is set to hear oral arguments on April 29 on whether the Trump Administration can end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for people from Haiti and Syria. Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is a humanitarian immigration protection granted to nationals from countries experiencing ongoing armed conflict, environmental disasters, or extraordinary conditions. It allows eligible individuals already in the U.S. to live and work lawfully, preventing their removal, though it does not provide a pathway to permanent residence.
The cases before the Court—Trump v. Miot and Noem v. Doe—directly affects about 350,000 Haitians and 7,000 Syrians. But the Court’s decision will almost certainly have consequences for the entire TPS population—roughly 1.3 million people from 17 countries.
The following is a statement from José Palma of the National TPS Alliance, a grassroots immigrant rights organization advocating for permanent residency and equal rights for TPS beneficiaries:
“We TPS holders have been fighting in court to defend our rights since President Trump’s first term. We are still fighting – and with actions across the country this month we want to lift the urgency of the TPS families. As any immigrant who came before us, we will do all we can to protect our families’ future in the United States.
This is a fight for justice. If the Administration wins, nothing would stop it from going all the way. Every TPS holder could suddenly and permanently lose legal status—including many who have built lives here over years or even decades. It would amount to the largest ‘de-documentation’ of lawful immigrants in U.S. history.
“By trying to end TPS, the Administration is hoping to expel people living and working here legally, paying fees and taxes, following all the rules. This fight is not about ‘legal’ vs. ‘illegal’ immigration. It’s about Trump’s hatred of migrants from what he calls “shithole countries” in the Caribbean, Latin America, Africa, and Asia. It’s about ignorant cruelty and racist hate.
“The National TPS Alliance will not go quietly. Since last week, we have been mobilizing across the country. Events are taking place nationwide, and members of the press are invited to attend and interview our leaders. Find all our events here.”
